Vermouth in Tarragona
Every Sunday at 12:30, the Part Alta of Tarragona fills with locals over draught vermouth, anchovies and conversation. The most authentic ritual in the city.
In Tarragona, Sunday vermouth is not a custom — it's a religion. The bars of Plaça de la Font and the streets of the Part Alta fill with families, friends and neighbours sharing the weekly ritual before the big Sunday lunch. No rush. No tourists. Just real people enjoying their city.
What is Tarragona vermouth?
Vermouth here is always on draught — never from a bottle. It's a red, aromatic vermouth, served cold in a short glass with ice and an orange slice. Accompanied by anchovies in vinegar (essential), olives, crisps and sometimes a tapa of pâté or escalivada. The ritual lasts exactly as long as it should: one to two hours.
When to go
The sacred moment is Sunday between 12:30 and 2:30pm. Saturday also has atmosphere, but Sunday is the big day. In summer, terraces fill by noon. In winter, people prefer the bar interior.
Best bars for vermouth
Bar Savoy
Classic bar📍 Plaça de la Font
The oldest and most authentic. No cocktail menu, no ambient music. Just vermouth, anchovies and the whole Plaça de la Font in front. The favourite of older Tarraconenses.
🍹 Draught vermouth + anchovies in vinegar + olives
Bar Joventut
Neighbourhood bar📍 Carrer Major
On the most beautiful pedestrian street in the Part Alta. Narrow terrace, wooden chairs, great atmosphere. The favourite of the neighbourhood's twenty-somethings.
🍹 Vermouth + crisps + house pâté tapa
El Cau del Llop
Wine and vermouth bar📍 Part Alta
Specialising in Priorat wines and artisan vermouth. If you want to go beyond industrial vermouth, this is your bar. Small, intimate, local products.
🍹 Artisan vermouth + local charcuterie board
Plaça de la Font terraces
Multiple terraces📍 Plaça de la Font
The square has several terraces that merge into one. On Sunday summer mornings it's impossible to get a table without arriving before 12:30. Pure local atmosphere.
🍹 Whatever tapas of the day + draught vermouth
What to order with vermouth
Anchovies in vinegar
Essential. The best come from the Serrallo, fresh from the previous day. Never from a jar.
Arbequina olives
The native Catalan olive. Small, mild flavour. Always on the table without asking.
Crisps (bag)
It sounds absurd but it's part of the ritual. Always from a bag, never made in the bar.
Escalivada with coca
Escalivada (grilled aubergine and pepper) on coca de recapte flatbread is the most Catalan bite on the planet. Order it if you see it on the menu.
House pâté
Many bars have a homemade pâté served with toasted country bread. Simple, but very good.
The ritual step by step
- 1
Arrive in the Part Alta between 12:00 and 12:30. Before that there's no atmosphere.
- 2
Find a table at Plaça de la Font or on the adjacent street terraces.
- 3
Order 'un vermut de grifo' — no need to say more, they know what it means.
- 4
Anchovies and olives usually come automatically. If not, ask for them.
- 5
Don't stand at the bar: sit down, because this takes as long as it takes.
- 6
Second round optional. Afterwards, everyone heads to the family restaurant for lunch.
The secret tourists don't know
Vermouth on the Rambla Nova is for tourists. The real Tarragona vermouth happens in the Part Alta, in bars with no flashy terrace, plastic chairs and regulars of a lifetime. If the bar has an English menu on the door, it's not the right place.
