The markets
Where to shop in Tarragona

Mercat Central de Tarragona
Tarragona's gastronomic heart. The 1915 Modernista building houses the city's most important municipal market, with over 100 stalls. Fruit and vegetables from the Camp de Tarragona (km0), fresh fish from the Serrallo fish market, artisan meats and charcuterie, local cheeses, Reus PGI hazelnuts, Siurana DO olive oil and flowers. The salt-cured anchovies stall is one of the market's hidden gems.
Must buy
- ▸Salt-cured Mediterranean anchovies
- ▸Reus PGI hazelnuts (the best in Europe)
- ▸Siurana DO olive oil
- ▸Local sheep's cheese
- ▸Artisan romesco sauce in jars
Go first thing (8:00–9:00) for the best produce with no crowds. Fridays the market is especially well-stocked.

Mercat del Serrallo
The fishermen's market where Serrallo fishermen sell the day's catch directly. Tarragona red prawns, mantis shrimps, lobsters, sea bass, sea bream and all the local Mediterranean catch. For visitors with a kitchen, you can buy the same seafood served at the city's best restaurants. The auction takes place each afternoon.
Must buy
- ▸Tarragona red prawns (confirm they're from the local market)
- ▸Mediterranean mantis shrimps
- ▸Fresh sea bass and sea bream
- ▸Mediterranean squid and cuttlefish
Fresh red prawns only arrive on certain days: call ahead or go early to confirm availability. If they have them, buy them that same day.

Part Alta Craft Market
At weekends, local artisans fill the squares and lanes of the Part Alta with their stalls. Handcrafted ceramics with Roman motifs, local design jewellery, artisan textiles, natural products, books on the history and gastronomy of Tarragona. Perfect for finding unique, non-touristy souvenirs.
Must buy
- ▸Ceramics with Roman Tarraco motifs
- ▸Local artisan jewellery
- ▸Books and guides about Tarragona
- ▸Handmade soaps and cosmetics
The Plaça dels Àngels market has the most original artisans. Small and very authentic.
What to take home
The best products from Tarragona
Food & drink
Artisan romesco sauce
Tarragona's emblematic sauce. Available in jars at the Mercat Central and Part Alta shops. The authentic version is made with ñoras peppers, roasted tomatoes, almonds and Reus hazelnuts. Look for artisan versions with no preservatives.
Reus hazelnuts (PGI)
The Reus marcona hazelnut is the most prized in Europe for pastry and cooking. An essential ingredient in authentic romesco. At the Mercat Central they sell them raw, roasted or sugared. Taking home a kilo is compulsory.
Mediterranean anchovies
Salt-cured anchovies from Tarragona's fish market are of exceptional quality. Available in tins or glass jars with olive oil. The best stalls at the Mercat Central have artisan-cured anchovies.

Extra-virgin olive oil from the Siurana Denomination of Origin, produced in the Camp de Tarragona districts. Arbequina variety of the highest quality. Look for the Siurana DO seal on the label.
