Hidden Tarragona
Tarragona's most charming hidden spots
Every corner of the old town hides a story. These are the most special nooks in the city — the ones locals keep as their own treasures.
Tarragona has the rare quality of surprising you when you least expect it. You turn a corner and find a Roman arch embedded in a Baroque facade. You climb a staircase and suddenly the Mediterranean opens up before you. These are the spots that make Tarragona a city worth getting lost in.
The 10 most special spots
Placeta del Pallol
Medieval squareOne of the oldest and quietest squares in the old town, surrounded by medieval facades and with an atmosphere completely removed from tourism.
Carrer dels Cavallers
Medieval streetThe most photogenic street in Tarragona. Irregular cobblestones, medieval stone facades, iron lanterns and noble shields embedded in the walls. In summer it's covered with coloured parasols that create magical light.
Seminari Viewpoint
Unknown viewpointA balcony over the Mediterranean with almost no tourists. From here you see the amphitheatre from above, Miracle Beach and the open horizon without any obstruction.
Cathedral Crypt
Archaeological spaceBelow the Gothic cathedral lie remains of an earlier Romanesque cathedral, and below that, the foundations of the Roman temple dedicated to Augustus. Three layers of history in one space.
Jardins del Seminari
Secret gardenA Mediterranean garden of cypresses, bougainvillea and palm trees with views of the amphitheatre and sea, completely unknown to most visitors.
Plaça del Fòrum
Urban ruinIn the centre of the old town, the remains of the Roman forum emerge between medieval and modern buildings. A Roman column pokes out between a shop and a bar.
Passatge de la Pescateria
Historic alleyA narrow passage barely a metre wide connecting two streets of the old town. Moss-covered walls, centuries-old cobblestones and absolute silence.
Roman Circus Terrace
Historic terraceThe terrace atop the Pretorium Tower offers a 360-degree view over all of Tarragona: the Mediterranean, the plain, the cathedral and the walls.
Cala Waikiki
Secret coveA little stony cove with turquoise water hidden between the cliffs south of the amphitheatre. A rough track puts off most tourists.
Roman Necropolis of Francolí
Archaeological siteOne of Tarragona's most important and least visited sites: a 3rd-century AD Roman necropolis with over 2,000 excavated tombs.
Tips for getting lost well
Put your phone away for at least an hour and just wander the old town without a destination. The city rewards you when you're not in a hurry.
The best photos of the old town's hidden spots are in the early morning (before 9 am) and in the golden hour before sunset, when the light catches the stone sideways.
In summer, the old town is ten degrees cooler than the beach area thanks to its narrow streets and elevation — the best place in the city when the heat hits.
Wear comfortable shoes with good grip: the cobblestones are uneven and can be slippery in wet weather.
