When to visit Tarragona?
Tarragona has a Mediterranean climate all year round, but some months are clearly better than others. Honest guide to the best time depending on what you're looking for.
Good news: Tarragona can be visited all year. Better news: if you choose the right month, the experience improves dramatically. The secret few tourists know is that September and October are exceptionally good months — fewer people, sea temperature of 22–25°C and monuments without queues.

My recommendation?
September
Santa Tecla + warm sea + no overcrowding = the perfect month
If I can only name one month, I'd say September. You get Santa Tecla (the most authentic festival in Catalonia), sea temperature of 24–25°C, monuments without summer queues and terraces full of life without August's overcrowding. If budget matters, go in October or November.
Key festivals calendar
Holy Week
Historic processions through the streets of the Part Alta. Centuries old. Not folklore: genuine emotion.
Tarraco Viva
Europe's largest Roman festival. 10 days of historical re-enactments, street theatre and Roman markets at the Amphitheatre.
Feast of Saint John
Midsummer festival with bonfires on the beach. The longest night of the year.
Santa Tecla
Tarragona's main festival (15–23 Sept). Castellers, gegants, diables, cercaviles. UNESCO Heritage. The most important.
Castells Competition
The world's largest castellers festival. 17,000 spectators at the Tarraco Arena. Every two years (2024, 2026...).
Santa Llúcia Fair
Traditional Christmas market in the Part Alta with crafts, nativity scenes and local products.
Tips by type of trip
For monuments: March–May or September–October. Shorter queues, better photographic light.
For beaches: July–September. Warmest sea in August (26°C). September has fewer people.
For festivals: Santa Tecla (Sept) is essential. Tarraco Viva (May) if you love Roman history.
For gastronomy: October (Priorat harvest). The year's best wines are uncorked in autumn.
To save money: November–February. Hotels up to 40% cheaper. Monuments are equally spectacular.
