Tarragona for families
Tarragona with kids: the complete guide
Gladiators, secret tunnels beneath the city, water parks and calm beaches. Tarragona has everything a family needs for a perfect getaway.
Tarragona is one of the most underrated family travel destinations in Spain. Children are hooked on the Roman mysteries from the very first moment: walking through the underground passageways of the Roman Circus, imagining gladiators in the amphitheatre or climbing the walls of the Passeig Arqueològic are experiences no history textbook can match. Add calm-water beaches, PortAventura 30 minutes away by car and a city that is entirely walkable — and the result is a top-tier family destination.
Activities for kids
Underground Roman Circus
From age 4The underground passageways of the Roman Circus are the most popular activity for children. Walking beneath the modern city through 2,000-year-old vaults, imagining chariots racing along the 325-metre track and discovering the secrets of Tarraco is an adventure no child forgets. The route is guided and very accessible.
Buy the combined MHT pass: it covers the Roman Circus, the Amphitheatre and more monuments at a reduced price.
Passeig Arqueològic (Roman Walls)
All agesTarragona's Roman walls are a genuine adventure for children: towers, bastions, historic cannons and panoramic views from the top. The Passeig Arqueològic is ideal for kids because there is space to run, (safely) climb and discover historical corners around every turn.
The 17th–18th-century cannons installed along the promenade are a magnet for children. Allow plenty of time to explore.
PortAventura World
All ages (by zone)One of the best theme parks in Europe is just 30 minutes from Tarragona. PortAventura has themed areas for all ages, from Sesame Adventure for toddlers to adrenaline rides for older kids and adults. Ferrari Land and the Caribe Aquatic Park water park complete the offering.
Book online in advance to save 20–40% off gate prices. In summer, arrive at opening time.
Arrabassada Beach (Blue Flag)
All agesThe best family beach in Tarragona: calm waters thanks to the bay's orientation, fine sand, easy access and full facilities. The Blue Flag guarantees water quality. Showers, beach bars, sun-lounger rental and lifeguards in peak season.
Arrabassada's car park is paid in peak season. The bus from the centre (line 1) is more convenient and cheaper.
Aquopolis Costa Daurada
From age 2 (by zone)The Costa Daurada's largest water park is 15 minutes from Tarragona in Salou. Slides for all levels, a wave pool, toddler pools and a lazy river. A full day of water fun, perfect on the hottest summer days.
Book online for a discount. Bring your own snacks and drinks — food inside the park is expensive.
Castellers in the Plaça de la Font
All agesWatching a castellers performance (human towers) is a unique cultural experience that leaves children open-mouthed. The Plaça de la Font in Tarragona is one of the best stages to see them. Performances are especially frequent in summer and during the Festa de Santa Tecla (September). UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Performances are free and somewhat spontaneous. Follow the local castellers groups (Xiquets de Tarragona and Xiquets del Serrallo) on social media to find out when they perform.
Best beaches for families
Arrabassada Beach
The top family choice: 600 metres of fine sand, calm waters, Blue Flag status and full facilities. The bay shields the beach from waves, making it perfect for young children. It is 2 km from the city centre.
La Pineda Beach
A 2.5-kilometre stretch of golden sand with very shallow water — ideal for young children who love exploring the shoreline safely. Located in Vila-seca, 10 minutes from Tarragona, right next to PortAventura. Perfect for combining the theme park and the beach on the same day.
Coma-ruga
25 km from Tarragona, Coma-ruga has one of the calmest beaches on the Costa Daurada: flat water, no surf, very gradual depth. Ideal for babies and children starting to swim. The promenade is wide with plenty of shade.
Where to eat with kids
- →
Serrallo neighbourhood restaurants are very family-friendly: set lunch menus with fresh fish, terrace beside the harbour and a relaxed atmosphere. Children usually go for fideuà or paella.
- →
Plaça de la Font has several restaurants with outdoor seating in the main square — a great option for an early dinner with children while watching city life go by.
- →
The ice cream shops along Rambla Nova serve the best artisan gelato in the city. An evening stroll along the Rambla after dinner is the most pleasant family night-time activity.
- →
In summer, the beach bars at Arrabassada and La Pineda offer simple, fresh food (sandwiches, salads, paella) at reasonable prices. Eating on the beach with children is always easier than in a sit-down restaurant.
- →
Avoid restaurants in the old town at peak times (2:00–3:30 pm and 9:00–10:30 pm): waits are long and children get restless. Eat slightly earlier or later than the usual Spanish mealtimes.
Practical tips for a family visit
The best months to visit Tarragona with children are June and September: the heat is pleasant, the sea is warm, beaches are not overcrowded and all monuments are open.
In July and August, avoid open-air monuments between 12 and 4 pm. Save that time for the beach or indoor activities (museums, underground Roman Circus). Go to monuments early in the morning.
Always bring: high-factor sun protection (children burn quickly in the Mediterranean), reusable water bottles, comfortable shoes for walking on stone surfaces and a light waterproof layer for spring and autumn weather changes.
Tarragona is fully walkable from the Part Alta to the amphitheatre, the Serrallo and the Rambla Nova. Pushchairs and wheelchairs can navigate most routes without difficulty. The Passeig Arqueològic has some steps but accessible alternatives exist.
Under-16s get free or heavily discounted entry to all MHT monuments. Check the conditions on the official website before buying.
